Thailand Flood Relief Effort

The devastating floods in Thailand have been occurring since early August 2011. Thousands of homes and farms have been underwater for almost 3 months at the time this is written (26 October, 2011). More recently the floods have arrived in Bangkok. Now over a million people have had their homes flooded severely, mostly submerged to the rooftop, over a million people are out of work as massive industrial estates have flooded.
In my estimation this will be a more challenging disaster than the tsunami of 2004. The tsunami came, did it’s damage, and left. The clean-up began immediately. In these floods, there is nothing that can be done to restore people’s lives to any sense of normality until the water recedes. That could be months more.

Here in Phuket we are safe from the devastation. We are an island, and we are over 1,000km from the worst of the floods. But we are impacted. And we want to help.
Within Atmanjai we are collecting clothes from staff, friends, family and many of our guests are generously donating unwanted clothing also.
Should you wish to help, I believe the most effective avenue for support is the local Rotary Club. (Please note: I am a former president of, and am a current member of the Rotary Club of Patong Beach). After the tsunami our Rotary Club managed donations in excess of $USD 1,000,000. We chose to have our accounts audited and evidenced that every single cent reached those who it was intended for. Not a single cent was lost in administration or other costs.
If you wish to make a cash contribution to assist in easing the suffering of those affected by these floods, the Rotary Club of Patong Beach will ensure that it is used wisely and appropriately.
Be well,
Michael Massey
